The recent scares in many countries from contaminated foods has caused many people to look at ways to grow their own foods or seek out other organic alternatives.
Organic foods are produced when the farmers work with nature to produce healthier plants. The modern way of growing crops includes use of heavy chemicals (including fertilizers and pest control methods). The organic method uses crop rotation, helpful insects and other less invasive methods to get the results required.
Because of the methods chosen with organic gardening, there is usually a higher percentage of crop loss than with chemical methods. This accounts for some of the higher costs involved with purchasing organic vegetables.
Not all organic products are created equal. Some farmers will turn to “approved” methods of chemical control. The best way to insure that your vegetables are completely organic is to visit the farm and talk directly with the grower to determine the methods used to produce the vegetables.
